NAPOLES MARTY
Napoles Marty is a sculptor and painter whose practice centers on the human body as a carrier of meaning and ideas. Using wood, plaster, clay, and oil, he creates figures that blur the line between reality and fiction, with aesthetics ranging from classical to modernist. His work is raw, and often grotesque, reflecting themes of power, vulnerability, and transformation.
At the heart of Marty’s practice are figures that serve as spiritual protectors or guardians. These beings—part human, part creature—evolve into narrative forms that explore memory, myth, and cultural practices. They channel personal dreams and lived experiences, becoming symbols of protection.
Marty carves wooden logs with chainsaws, then burns and chars their surfaces, breathing life into each sculpture through a physical, elemental process. His paintings and drawings are direct extensions of these sculptures, embodying similar energy to the process of making and charring. Through these forms, he brings together a cohesive expression of his vision—one that draws on his cultural roots, Cuban heritage, and creates space for a spiritual dialogue with tradition and the body as a symbol.
